Full Monty GPS Trip Movie

I have now had the opportunity to take the Magellan with me on a camping trip from my home at Wonga Beach in Far North Queensland to the Atherton Tablelands, a 150 km trip.

I combined the GoogleEarth movie of the trip [from the Magellan data] with on-car camcorder footage in MovieMaker to make a 15 minute video of the whole trip.

Here is a sample at reduced definition/size

But best to goto the full version at UTube

Car Power Cord

I spent $25 on a cord to power the 510 from the car cigarette lighter and it is a real winner.

The display stays ON all the time at 100% brightness so no need to take eyes off road or pay $20 for those expensive lithium batteries

A GoogeEarth movie

I really love being able to save a track on the Magellan and import it into GoogleEarth and make trip movie.

Here we have my 20 minute trip from home to the shops reduced to ONE minute by using a 20 times "speed up".

It can be seen in better resolution at utube

Owners Manuals etc

I quickly realized that the PDF Owners Manual downloaded from the Magellan website was somewhat lacking in explanation of many features, even though it is 36 pages long and takes some time to digest.  Part of the problem may have been my newby status in all things GPS, with the Manual assuming a greater basic understanding of GPS.

I then Googled for forums/blogs but found nothing of any real benefit, which is essentially why I started this blog.

I am no expert

It is now 6 days since I bought my first ever GPS device, so I am in no way an instant expert on how to use/abuse such devices.  But I think I have rounded the corner from day 3, still wondering why I paid $299 from my Age Pension "reserves" for "a gadget I don't really need".

The HUGE turnaround was when I found that it links to GoogleEarth [which I use all the time for many reasons] which then overcame all the issues I was having with simply using the GPS as a stand alone device.

So I will add posts here as I continue on my journey of discovery with the device and its many wonders.
